A good friend of mine, Mark Widawer, is a list building and landing page specialist. He loves to use the analogy that attempting to sell customers before getting to know them is like proposing marriage before asking for the first date.
It sounds pretty ridiculous right? But a lot of people treat their online businesses this way. Instead of asking permission to get to know the prospect better many web sites go straight for the sell.
The number one goal of your web site should NOT be to “sell” your visitors on your products or services on their first visit.
The number one goal of your website should be to start a relationship with your potential customers/clients on their first visit.
Gettin’ Geeky Wit It
Here’s a little news for those of you who lean towards the geeky side.
If you’ve been doing business online for any period of time you probably already know the importance of selecting the proper keywords for your web site and Internet marketing campaigns. What if you could know the actual intent of the person who is typing your target keywords into the search engines? That would be pretty cool wouldn’t it? I thought so.
Microsoft, of all people, came out with a little tool that will gauge the commercial intent of any given search phrase or web site. You can check it out for yourself here… http://adlab.msn.com/Online-Commercial-Intention/Default.aspx
Today some real geeks who created this script, write algorithms and do all sorts of other wacky things released a report of their initial findings. They claim that “the results demonstrate a 90% accuracy rate.”
Their stated motivation for this research…
Who’s Looking Out for YOUR Online Reputation?
One of my clients recently had a person come into their business and offer to get them on the first page of Google for their keywords. If this person couldn’t do it then my client wouldn’t have to pay anything.
This clients question to me, which was a good one, was “Why shouldn’t I give it a try?”
What could it hurt, right?
Google’s Starting to Show Some Numbers

Today when I logged into my Google AdWords account, to tweak a few of my campaigns, I was greeted with the most wonderful data I’ve seen from Google in a long time. (Not including all the 1st page rankings I’ve been getting lately, of course.)
What is this delightful little tidbit of info you ask. Well, if you’ve ever used the Google AdWords Keyword Tool for doing keyword research you know that in the past Google did not display numbers in the monthly and annual Approximate Search Volume columns. Before they just displayed graphs. So, while you could tell whether or not a keyword had search volume you never really knew what the actual number was.
As Google Puts it…
