One of my favorite movie scenes of all time is the exchange between Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson in a Few Good Men.
I’m sure you’ve seen it. Tom Cruise keeps insisting that Jack tell him the truth until Jack is finally provoked into screaming the now famous line. “You want the truth? You can’t handle the truth!”
Most web site owners and people doing business online believe that the truth is they need more traffic in order to be successful. While that is definitely part of the truth there is a flip side to that coin that most online business owners don’t do too well with. That is converting traffic to leads and/or sales.
Ask for the First Date before Proposing Marriage

A good friend of mine, Mark Widawer, is a list building and landing page specialist. He loves to use the analogy that attempting to sell customers before getting to know them is like proposing marriage before asking for the first date.
It sounds pretty ridiculous right? But a lot of people treat their online businesses this way. Instead of asking permission to get to know the prospect better many web sites go straight for the sell.
The number one goal of your web site should NOT be to “sell” your visitors on your products or services on their first visit.
The number one goal of your website should be to start a relationship with your potential customers/clients on their first visit.
101 Ways to Improve Your Conversion Rate

While doing a little light Sunday morning reading I came across this unbelievable article on improving your conversion rate.
The article itself is titled “101 Easy Ways to use Google Website Optimizer”. Don’t let the title fool you though. The lessons taught in this article can be applied by anyone doing business online. Not just those who use Google Website Optimizer.
It’s written by “The Conversion Rate Squirrel” which I suspect is really Dr. Karl Blanks. (Who really is a rocket scientist.)
Anyway, if you want some great tips on improving your conversion rate and marketing your website in general then I highly recommend this article.
